DISCOVERY / Champagne & The Art of Assemblage
Ten harvest years, one new edition.
Krug Grande Cuvée 174ème Édition gathers wines from ten different years around the 2018 harvest. The new release makes an old cellar library relevant in the present.

A Champagne without a single vintage on its front label can contain a remarkably precise relationship with time. Krug Grande Cuvée 174ème Édition, a 2026 release, brings together 143 wines from ten different years. The youngest comes from 2018, the oldest from 2001. Neither date alone describes what is in the glass.
The cellar is also a working library
Krug records reserve wines as 36 per cent of the final blend. Those retained wines are not simply older stock waiting for a prestigious anniversary. They are components available to the cellar team when creating a new composition. The 2018 harvest provides the centre of this edition, while other years contribute material that a single harvest could not supply on its own.
That makes the numbered edition worth understanding. It identifies a particular composition within a continuing idea, rather than making every bottle called Grande Cuvée interchangeable. Decanter’s July 2026 reporting describes the reserve library as central to the house’s decisions. The interesting luxury is accumulated judgement and the ability to work across time, not a rule that a more expensive single-vintage wine must be better.
Begin with the edition, then the bottle
Look for an identified edition and a sound storage history. A tasting can make the idea more tangible than a purchase for unopened display. An October 2026 announcement offers the 174ème Édition by the glass at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo through a stated December window, subject to the venue’s current arrangements. Elsewhere, ask a specialist about a comparison between editions. The reward is a richer way to understand a wine, without turning a drinking experience into a promised investment return.

The ten harvest years are not ten consecutive years, and this is not a 2018 vintage Champagne. WHV has not tasted the edition or verified a particular bottle’s storage. A listed tasting programme does not guarantee stock or a reservation.
