The axe you learn to make.
A short course at Gränsfors Bruk changes the relationship between a tool and its owner. The object becomes a record of decisions you have begun to understand.

Most people meet an axe after every difficult decision has been made. Its shape arrives complete, and the work that produced it remains out of sight. At Gränsfors Bruk in Sweden, a two-day Forge Your Own Axe course offers another starting point: working at a hearth under the guidance of an experienced smith from the factory.
A tool becomes less anonymous
Sagaliden organises the courses in collaboration with Gränsfors Bruk. Its 2026 programme distinguishes the two-day axe course from longer courses in basic blacksmithing and toolmaking. Participants work at their own hearth in the training forge. The operator lists protective equipment and accommodation arrangements, but the exact dates and inclusions should be confirmed for the booking being considered.
The valuable thing is not simply taking home a tool with a more personal story. Making changes what you notice. The relationship between a shape and its purpose becomes something to investigate rather than a feature to accept. That can enrich later choices about tools, repair and skilled work. It is also a reminder that apparently simple objects contain decisions that cannot be learned from a product photograph.
Two days are a beginning
Ask the organiser about the next available dates, physical demands, language and suitability before planning travel. The published 2026 season runs from April to October, so a listed programme is not proof of a remaining place. Two days do not make an independent professional smith. They can, however, provide a grounded introduction to a craft and a more informed relationship with the objects it produces.
