The engineering behind the long way.
The 2018 Honda Gold Wing is interesting beyond its size. Its flat-six engine and double-wishbone front suspension show how touring comfort begins with the arrangement of the machine.

A Gold Wing can be mistaken for a motorcycle whose answer to every problem is more equipment. The 2018 redesign tells a subtler story. Honda retained the horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine but reconsidered the arrangement around it, looking for a more compact way to make a long-distance touring machine.
The suspension changes the whole package
The double-wishbone front suspension was central to that work. Its wheel movement allowed the engine to sit closer to the front wheel, while the revised engine itself occupied less space. Honda offered six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions. These are different configurations, not features that should be assumed from a photograph of the bodywork.
What holds interest is the integration. Comfort does not come only from adding a larger seat or screen. Engine placement, suspension movement, rider position and luggage all negotiate the same finite space. The result gives a technically curious rider something substantial to understand, and a prospective owner a specific kind of travel to consider.
Buy a condition, not a reputation
Try the weight at parking speed as carefully as the riding position. For a used example, verify the exact trim, transmission, service history and outstanding campaigns with a knowledgeable workshop. Check electronics, suspension, tyres and luggage mechanisms, and budget for upkeep. The photograph identifies a 2018 SC79-generation machine, not a current special edition. A strong engineering identity does not make every surviving example a sound purchase.
