The engineering behind the delicate coupé.
The Lancia Fulvia Coupé combines a light-looking cabin with an unusual mechanical arrangement. Its lasting interest is richer than a borrowed rally association.
Published 28 October 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
The Fulvia Coupé has the delicacy of a much smaller object. Fine pillars, a generous glasshouse and a compact body give it an unusually clear outline. Its charm does not need stripes or rally lamps, although competition imagery has become difficult to separate from the name. Looking beneath that imagery makes the car more interesting.
A familiar name contains different cars
Lancia introduced the Piero Castagnero-designed coupé in 1965. Stellantis Heritage describes a shortened wheelbase, a two-plus-two layout and the compact V4 engine that connects it to the Fulvia family. Front-wheel drive adds another part of its identity. The coupé, the Zagato-bodied Sport and the more specialised HF variants are not interchangeable descriptions of the same specification.
The WHV argument is the combination of proportion and engineering in a car that can still be investigated as a working machine. A historical FIA homologation record helps identify a particular competition specification, but does not authenticate a road car wearing similar decoration. The photographed car is presented with rally-style equipment. Its appearance alone cannot establish competition history, originality or an HF identity.
Buy the example, not the mythology
Find a specialist before becoming attached to an individual example. Structural corrosion, previous repairs, mechanical condition and the availability of the correct parts deserve closer attention than a convincing paint scheme. Establish chassis and engine identity against the relevant documents. The reward can be an unusually characterful way to travel, but the cost of preserving that character belongs in the decision from the beginning.
