Donkervoort F22 makes less mass matter.

A five-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual sit inside a car designed around an unusually strict weight target.

The F22 has an unmistakable outline, but the more useful number is the mass behind it. Donkervoort describes a car developed around a 750 kg target, keeping a relatively compact mechanical package at the centre of its performance argument.

A coherent set of trade-offs

The manufacturer specifies a turbocharged five-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual gearbox. It explains the gearbox choice partly through packaging and weight. These are deliberate trade-offs within a whole design, not simply a list of the largest available components.

The WHV interest is the clarity of that proposition. A car can be desirable because it offers an experience increasingly distinct from everyday transport. Whether that experience is enjoyable for a particular owner requires a drive, not a comparison of acceleration claims or production numbers.

Investigate the individual car

Establish the status and specification of the exact car being offered, then investigate local registration, service, parts and insurance. Inspect a used example’s history and any track use with appropriate expertise. Limited production does not remove depreciation, running costs or the difficulty of finding a future buyer.
