DISCOVERY / Leatherwork & Japanese Gilding

The seam becomes the subject.

A Delvaux Tempête brings Kanazawa leaf work to the joins of a leather bag. The interesting detail is where two craft traditions meet.

A seam usually does its work quietly. In this Tempête from Delvaux’s Craft Beyond Borders project, the meeting of leather panels becomes part of the visual subject. Japanese leaf work traces elements of the bag’s construction, inviting a closer look at places that might otherwise disappear into a familiar silhouette.

Look where the panels meet

Delvaux describes a dialogue with Kanazawa artisans through gold and platinum leaf. Wako’s 2026 presentation identifies the pictured alligator Tempête with Kanazawa gold-leaf work. That identity matters. It is not the Brillant or Pin Mini also discussed in the wider programme, and the technique should not be reduced to a generic description of Japanese decoration.

The useful connection is between two ways of handling a surface. Leather construction depends on cutting, joining and forming. Gilding draws attention to the joins and fittings rather than hiding them. The project can evoke ideas associated with repaired objects, but that does not establish that the bag was previously broken, repaired or made through a circular production process.

A craft reference is not a repair history

Explore the maker’s account before treating the piece as a conventional everyday bag. Ask about the exact materials, finish, care, repair options and any documentation relevant to travel with exotic leather. The June 2026 Wako presentation is a past event, not a current shopping appointment. The enduring interest is a precise meeting of skills, with availability and ownership obligations to be established separately.
