DISCOVERY / Site-Specific Art & Visits
At Chinati, a visit with changing light.
Robert Irwin’s permanent installation gives a particular reason to check which Chinati tour you are booking.
Published 4 November 2026 · WHV
In Marfa, Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk) makes the site part of the work. The approach, courtyard and openings shape how natural light reaches the building. What the eye can distinguish changes as you move and as the daylight changes.
The Chinati Foundation says guided tours are needed for much of its collection. Use the current guided-tour listing to see which itinerary includes Irwin. The artillery sheds housing Judd’s aluminium works have a separate restoration closure, so old descriptions of the site may give you a different route.
Leave time to look at the approach and the inside as a sequence. If returning on another day, pay attention to what changed with the light rather than expecting to repeat an image you have already seen.
