DISCOVERY / Electric Hydrofoils & Shared Mobility
The ferry that lifts its hull.
Candela’s P-12 ferry Nova brings hydrofoil engineering into public transport. Its 2026 Stockholm archipelago project makes charging infrastructure as interesting as the boat itself.
Published 20 October 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
The unusual part of Candela’s P-12 is easiest to understand at speed. Underwater foils provide lift, raising the hull instead of making it continually push through the water. Putting that idea into an electric passenger ferry makes advanced marine engineering relevant to an ordinary journey, not only to a private owner.
Change the resistance, not only the motor
Nova is a P-12 Shuttle vessel used in Stockholm’s public transport trials. In July 2026, Region Stockholm announced a new research operation between Sollenkroka and Möja on line 14X, beginning on 22 June. The project includes an energy store intended to enable fast charging at Möjaström. The shore-side system matters because a promising vessel still needs an operating rhythm and somewhere appropriate to recharge.
The value is the combination of a physical idea with a shared use. Lifting the hull changes the drag problem, while route design and infrastructure determine what that can mean in practice. Candela also develops a separate Business configuration. It should not be confused with the Shuttle photographed here, nor should manufacturer performance comparisons become universal claims about every route or sea condition.
The route and the charger belong to the invention
For a possible encounter, check the live journey planner rather than treating an old announcement as a timetable. Region Stockholm describes the research service continuing towards autumn 2027 with a winter interruption and advance reservation requirements. Capacity is limited. Nova offers an intriguing question for anyone interested in vehicles: could the most desirable new machine be one you can use without owning it? Its significance rests in an evolving transport application, not a promise of effortless or impact-free travel.
