DISCOVERY / Active Acoustics & Sculptural Loudspeakers

A speaker that can change its beam.

Bang & Olufsen’s Beolab 90 treats the room as part of the listening problem. The 2026 Monarch execution adds remarkable woodwork to an existing, unusually ambitious acoustic platform.

A loudspeaker is often imagined as a box pointing at a chair. Bang & Olufsen’s Beolab 90 begins with a more elaborate question: how should sound leave the speaker when the listener, the room and the occasion change? Its unusual physical form is connected to that acoustic brief.

The cabinet is not the whole system

The active, eighteen-driver design provides controls for beam width and direction, alongside room compensation. These are ways of managing radiation and the listening environment, not a promise that furniture or placement no longer matters. A concentrated listening position and a room shared by several people create different demands. The system makes those relationships part of its operating vocabulary.

The Monarch execution unveiled in 2026 brings curved Santos palisander elements and carefully arranged wooden lamellae to the existing Beolab 90 platform. The sculptural surface makes an ambitious piece of electronics read partly as furniture. Its novelty is material and craft interpretation, not the invention of a new acoustic engine in 2026. Keeping that distinction visible is more revealing than reporting a spectacular price.

Listen to the controls, not the production number

Arrange a demonstration of the relevant Beolab 90 configuration. Ask to hear how the available beam settings change a familiar recording, and discuss installation, software and long-term specialist support. The exceptional edition is one way into the subject, not the only way to explore the technology. Its credible value is a serious attempt to connect an acoustic system with domestic space. Neither a limited edition nor extraordinary woodworking establishes that it will outperform every alternative or preserve its price.

Monarch is a 2026 material execution of an existing Beolab 90 platform, not a newly invented acoustic system. WHV has not auditioned it or measured room performance. Edition availability and future service need confirmation.
