The book you can walk into.
Venice’s Borges Labyrinth turns literary imagination into a physical route. Its 2026 restoration is a reminder that a living memorial needs more than an opening ceremony.

From above, the Borges Labyrinth reads as an ordered image. At ground level, that certainty gives way to turns, pauses and choices. The change of viewpoint is the experience. A literary idea becomes something you understand partly through your own movement, on an island already removed from Venice’s busiest routes.
A memorial that has to be tended
The labyrinth at the Giorgio Cini Foundation on San Giorgio Maggiore opened in 2011. Designed by Randoll Coate in homage to Jorge Luis Borges, it was realised with the involvement of the writer’s widow, María Kodama. The foundation’s account of its 2026 restoration places the living structure, made from thousands of box plants, within a longer act of cultural stewardship.
What holds value is not simply a photogenic pattern. The garden gives a reader another way to enter Borges’s association with branching paths, uncertainty and imagined worlds. It also makes care visible as part of cultural memory. A hedge is not a permanent stone inscription. Its legibility depends on cultivation and renewal, so the work continues long after the original design has been celebrated.
Choose the route that enters the maze
Choose the specific labyrinth visit through VisitCini rather than assuming every foundation tour includes entry. The operator distinguishes a view of the maze from the route that takes visitors inside with an audio guide. Check seasonal openings, accessibility and weather restrictions before booking. Read a Borges story beforehand, then let the walk be an encounter rather than a puzzle to finish as quickly as possible.

The archival photograph predates the 2026 restoration. A foundation tour offering a view is not necessarily an inside-the-labyrinth ticket. Opening and weather arrangements must be checked for the chosen date.
