DISCOVERY / Adaptive Reuse & Hospitality

Yangshuo Sugar House, the factory that kept its memory.

A former sugar mill becomes a place to stay among Guangxi’s karst mountains. Its industrial remains give the hotel something a new resort cannot invent.

The pool is framed by an old industrial structure. Beyond it, limestone peaks rise like a second, much older architecture. At Yangshuo Sugar House, the memorable view depends on both. Remove the factory and the landscape would still be beautiful, but the place would lose its particular story.

A mill becomes a destination

Vector Architects documents the transformation of a former sugar mill in Guangxi, with new accommodation alongside retained industrial buildings. The architectural project is also widely documented under its earlier Alila Yangshuo name. Horizontal Design, led by Ju Bin, developed the interiors. The difference between the old structures and the new work remains part of the experience.

This is why adaptive reuse can be more than a tasteful hotel style. Industrial proportions, masonry and the relationship to the river give the project constraints that a blank site would not supply. The designers use those constraints to make a place whose identity is difficult to reproduce elsewhere.

Look beyond the pool

A visit offers a way to examine that idea without owning a building. Look beyond the pool photograph to the passages, former working spaces and transitions between old and new. Check the current hotel’s room categories, access and seasonal conditions before booking. Architectural significance does not guarantee the same view from every room, and preserving a building is not itself a quantified claim about environmental impact.
