The value of a used tool.

A tool does not need a large price tag to develop a long relationship with its owner. The small Opinel No.6 makes that idea unusually visible: a wooden handle, a folding blade and a rotating metal collar.

A material asks something of its owner

Opinel identifies the current No.6 Carbon as its smallest model with the double Virobloc locking system. Its specification lists a seven-centimetre carbon-steel blade and a beech handle. The maker also makes the compromise clear. Carbon steel is susceptible to corrosion and needs drying and appropriate care. Stainless versions answer a different preference rather than a lesser level of taste.

The darkened surface on the photographed used example is a reminder that a working object changes. Patina alone is not evidence of good maintenance, and a pleasing surface cannot tell you whether a blade or lock is sound. The WHV interest is the possibility of understanding the materials and keeping a simple instrument useful, instead of treating each mark as a reason to replace it.

Choose for use, then look after it

Choose a size and material for a genuine task, and follow the maker’s care and safe-use instructions. Avoid soaking the wooden handle or putting a folding knife in a dishwasher. Check applicable possession, transport and carrying rules wherever you plan to use it. This is an ordinary cutting tool, not a status object or a suggestion to carry a blade indiscriminately. Its value is earned through appropriate, repeated work.
