Dorade was not finished racing.

In 2013, Dorade crossed the Pacific again. The wooden yawl was already more than eighty years old, but her owners had not prepared her to become a motionless monument. They brought her back to the race that had helped define her reputation.

A result with a qualification

The result needs precise language. The Transpacific Yacht Club records Dorade as first overall on corrected time, not as the fastest boat by elapsed time. Handicap scoring allowed designs of different speeds to compete. Weather also favoured her part of the fleet. The distinction makes the achievement more interesting, not less.

The return was not an untouched survival story. Nelson/Marek describes a substantial refit that included new spars, tangs, an engine installation and a new rudder, followed by preparation across several specialist yards. The organisers connect the victory to years of sea trials and constant refinement.

Preservation through participation

What holds value is the recovery of purpose. Dorade could once again cross an ocean as a competitive sailing yacht. That required people to decide which fabric and character to retain, where modern intervention was justified and how much work an active campaign would demand.

For another historic yacht, begin with the design, hull identity, survey history, structural work, systems and the record of every major intervention. Ask what the owner wants the boat to do. Preservation for display and preparation for offshore racing are both legitimate, but they are not the same project or the same cost.
