DISCOVERY / Interiors & Solid Materials
Dinesen Douglas, a floor to live with.
Wide Douglas-fir planks can give a room an unusually calm rhythm. Their appeal depends on understanding wood as a living material in use.

A floor is one of the largest objects in a home, though it is rarely described as one. Its joints establish a rhythm and its surface receives the evidence of daily life. Dinesen’s Douglas planks make that relationship especially visible through their width and grain.
A material with an afterlife
The company offers solid Douglas-fir boards in different dimensions and finishes. Its project documentation includes John Pawson’s Dinesen Apartment, where long pale boards contribute to the continuity of the interior. The maker also publishes guidance on installation, care and restoration, which belongs in the same decision as the showroom sample.
The value is not a promise that wood will remain untouched. It is the possibility of choosing a substantial material whose appearance and upkeep can be understood over time. The right finish and maintenance routine depend on the household, light, traffic and tolerance for marks.
Look at a floor already in use
Ask for a specification suited to the subfloor and heating arrangement, together with acclimatisation and care requirements. Look at an installed floor, ideally one already in use. Establish what restoration can reasonably achieve in the proposed installation rather than assuming every scratch or future change can simply be sanded away.
