The work behind keeping art.

Rotterdam’s Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen turns art storage into a public encounter. The most important exhibit may be the work that keeps a collection alive.

The mirrored bowl in Rotterdam’s Museumpark is easy to photograph. Its more unusual contribution is inside. Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen makes the storage of art part of the visitor experience, bringing attention to a side of museums that normally remains behind closed doors. A collection is not simply the selection hanging in its galleries.

Beyond the gallery wall

MVRDV designed the building around storage, circulation and views into the work of caring for objects. Different materials require different conditions, so the depot uses distinct climate zones. Art is not arranged solely as a chronological story. Racks, cases and conservation processes reveal another logic, shaped by what objects need in order to survive.

That makes the building unusually relevant to WHV. Buying or inheriting something is the beginning of responsibility, not its conclusion. Paintings, photographs and designed objects do not all tolerate the same light, humidity or handling. The depot gives those invisible requirements an architectural presence, without making the visitor become a conservator to appreciate them.

Look at what preservation requires

Book through the museum and check the current arrangements for depot tours and specific collections. Public access does not mean every work is continuously on display or every storage room can be entered freely. Use the visit to notice supports, spacing, packaging and environmental control as well as individual artworks. The memorable discovery is that keeping value often involves skilled, ordinary work performed long after the excitement of acquisition.
