DISCOVERY / Wine Heritage & Provenance

Biondi-Santi Riserva, history needs a cellar.

The archive at Tenuta Greppo makes time tangible. It also shows why the condition of an individual bottle matters more than the prestige of its label.

A great wine label is easy to recognise. The years between bottling and opening are much harder to see. Biondi-Santi’s Riserva makes that difference especially clear because the estate keeps a physical record of its own past.

A history of patient release

The producer traces the Riserva to 1888 and describes La Storica, the cellar at Tenuta Greppo where its Riserva vintages are preserved. The wine is not declared every year. Its published archive gives individual releases their own records rather than treating the name as one unchanging object.

This is where history becomes more useful than prestige. An old bottle held under documented conditions is a different proposition from one with an attractive label and an uncertain journey. A producer’s surviving archive demonstrates continuity within that cellar. It does not prove that every bottle circulating elsewhere has aged in the same way.

The cellar after the estate

For a recent release, identify the vintage and read its technical sheet before deciding when to open it. For an older bottle, ask for the chain of ownership, storage history, fill level and any documented recorking or other intervention. Consider a tasting through a reputable merchant before committing to a case. The value here is an encounter with a well-documented wine tradition, not an automatic conversion of age into profit.
